Corbusier Buren: DÉFINI, FINI, INFINI – the new exhibition of Daniel Buren, displays seven monumental works of the artist at MaMo (Marseille Modulor), the art centre of Cité Radieuse. Shown on the rooftop, the works are designed specifically for this place. If they fit perfectly here through the contrasting and matching of materials and space, they also function thanks to the fourth element: the sky. The exhibition lasts until 30 September.
For Ora-ïto, Director of MaMo, the reason was obvious behind the invitation of Daniel Buren. “Who could do better than this Master of work in-situ in adapting, investing and sublimating MaMo?”
Daniel Buren takes over the works of Le Corbusier by challenging the perspectives, exalting the points of view, absorbing the environment, playing with the dimensions, light, shadow, horizon….
But that does not satisfy him. The object that has become a work of art begins a dialogue with Le Corbusier. The two combine to achieve an organic whole. Indeed, just by observing their works, who can tell that there is a sixty-two year gap between the works of Daniel Buren and that of Le Corbusier?
Another space, which is vital for the works to breathe, is the sky. More precisely, the continuous play of the clouds, shadow, reflections and sunlight in the mirrors, like a subtle positioning of one’s own image that encourages an inoptical narcissism.
Strolling on the roof of Cité Radieuse is a completely different experience than strolling in a gallery, the sky calls upon us as a witness that the art of Daniel Buren is an invitation to get lost.
Ora-ïto talks about the gift for Marseille. “Like last year, the entire roof space will be used for exhibition. The entry to the roof is free for everyone. Daniel Buren compares one of his works to a lighthouse, which is visible from the Avenue du Prado. This exhibition is a gift for Marseille and its inhabitants.”
